ECOnGOOD Update – December 2024

Dear Supporters,

We are pleased to share with you the final issue of 2024, featuring a special selection of projects and events, along with a brief reflection on this year's challenges and achievements as we look towards the future.

This year has been transformative for our organisation: we launched our own ECOnGOOD Label and brand, celebrated the III Economy for the Common Good International Conference, welcomed Japan as a member of the International Federation, saw the first professional football club complete a Common Good Balance Sheet, established Spain's First Common Good Index—all alongside numerous other local and international milestones.

We are making significant progress towards becoming a more professional and accessible international organisation. In 2025, we will focus on strengthening our image, solidifying our presence, upgrading our tools, and professionalising our services. These improvements will help us better serve our expanding global community and attract more like-minded individuals to build towards the common good.

We are grateful to all of you who have closely followed our achievements and challenges throughout the year and who will continue to do so in the future.

Wishing you all peaceful holidays and a purposeful start to 2025!

Kindest regards,
Editorial Team

Ethical World Trade and ECG

International Business School has published a groundbreaking working paper that challenges the traditional "free trade" paradigm and proposes a new ethical approach to global trade. The research introduces an innovative "Economy for the Common Good" (ECG) framework—a paradigm designed to address current ecological and social crises through sustainable economic development, human rights, gender justice, and environmental protection.

The study was co-authored by Christian Felber, Brigitta Herrmann and Juergen Knirsch, and co-edited by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll) and the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).

You can read more about the study, download the complete working paper for free and read the policy brief from the EEB.

Valencia 2024: Social Economy and Common Good

Official statement by ECOnGOOD Spain:

By unanimous decision of its constituent associations, the Spanish Federation of the Economy for the Common Good has postponed the meeting on Social Economy and Sustainability that was to be held in Valencia on 22nd and 23rd November.

In light of the tragic consequences of the DANA (Isolated High-Level Depression) in Spain, particularly in Valencia, we wish to express our deepest solidarity with all victims and extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones or close friends.

Consequently, the Federation’s executive team has decided to postpone the meeting scheduled for 22nd and 23rd November at La Petxina. We believe that this is not a time for meetings, but for action—concrete measures that enable the implementation of effective initiatives focused on addressing the basic needs of affected families and the subsequent recovery of their living environment.

We would like to thank all those who had committed to participating in the meeting. We assure you that all the work done thus far will be preserved, with the event now rescheduled for March or April 2025.

We urge all supporters of the Economy for the Common Good movement to join any initiatives that may arise to assist the victims of the DANA.

Stay tuned for updates.

If you would like to help support the affected communities in Valencia, you can contribute through the social enterprise Novaterra Catering SL, a longstanding collaborator of the ECOnGOOD Valencian Regional Association. This social enterprise is coordinating and delivering hot meals to affected families who currently lack the means to prepare hot food. Each meal costs 4.50€.
